Frequently asked questions

  • How do I start?
Start by creating a subject: In the 'File' menu there is a menu item 'New Subject'. Than you can create some entries by using the menu item 'New Entry' or drag and drop some content to the entry list. [Back]

  • How do I edit the URL of a weblocation type entry?
Take a look at the info box (Command-I). For URL-type entries (extension .url) there is an additional field 'URL'. It should be editable. For other tyes of weblocation files the URL can't be edited. [Back]

  • Some items couldn't be found. I know for sure that they are in the database. What's wrong?
Presumably the search index isn't valid any more. This happens if you copy items by using the Finder into the database, for example. Try to rebuild the search index in the preferences. [Back]

  • How do I copy the URL address?
If you want to copy the URL of a webcontent type (i.e extension .url, .webarchive, .webloc) you can either use the contextmenu OR use the URL field in the info box OR info label (at the very top of the content window) OR select and copy the text content in the status label (at the very bottom of the content view). The latter are not available necessarily. [Back]

  • How do I use keywords?
The keywords are meant to be another way to categorize entries. You can predefine some keywords in the keyword list (by now there is only one keyword list for all databases) and then use them as some sort of often needed lables for each single entry. They will be found by a search (because they are added as note) and therefor will group entries which resides in different subjects, for example. You can define as many keywords as you like and can add as many keywords to en entry note as you wish. [Back]

  • The title sometimes contains underscores/hyphen?
Some characters aren't allowed for filenames. The titles of the entries correspond to the filenames. JournalX parse the titles for non-valid characters and replace them by hyphens. [Back]

  • One thing I do is rsync my JournalX directory to another Mac and was wondering if there was anything else I should be doing?
To rsync the JournalX database directory is no problem. The only point is to make sure to copy the hidden files also. Hidden files are prefixed by a dot (.) and not visible in the Finder normally. [Back]

  • The content can't be displayed.
Take a look at the next question. [Back]

  • What about Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations?
They can't be displayed in JournalX directly. Of course they can be dragged into JournalX and viewed with the appropriate application. To open them from within JournalX try to use the context menu in the entry list. Or take a look at the preferences in the 'Files' tab. There is an item labelled 'Unknown file types'. Note the tooltips. [Back]

  • Is there a network/multi-user option?
    No. [Back]

  • I don't see any webcontent?
Make sure that the setting 'Use internal browser' in the 'Web' tab in the preferences is checked. [Back]

  • Links in text can't be clicked?
Make sure that the setting 'Enable detection of links' in the 'Text' tab in the preferences is checked. [Back]

  • I need multiple databases!
There's an 'Database' menu item. Take a look at it. There you can create new databases, choose known database and export them. [Back]

  • How to copy email content?
Selected an email row in Mail and then copy and paste it into new created entry (preferable of type RTFD). Alternativly you can select the entire email and drag and drop it onto JournalX as new entry. [Back]

  • Entry list seems to list wrong content.
Try to create a new entry in the list in question and switch subject OR rebuild the search index in the preferences. [Back]

  • I want to create RTFD type entries?
Make sure that the menu item 'New Entry As RTF' is selected. Or hold down the Option-key while creating a new text entry. [Back]

  • JournalX crashed. What should I do?
Try to describe the circumstances and, if it is possible for you, send me the crash log. Either it is provided right after the crash as a message or you can obtain the information from the Console.app (located in the 'Utilities' folder). You can simply copy the content for JournalX and sent it to me as text file. That would be a great help. Thank you! [Back]

  • How do I contact you?
In JournalX help menu there is an item 'Mail To Developer'. Don't forget the subject in Mail. [Back]

  • For which operating system JournalX is available?
JournalX is created for the Mac OS X system only. It will run nativly on both PPC and Intel hardware. Though it will run quite fine on Mac OS 10.3.9 for best performance Mac OS 10.4 and above is recommended. [Back]

  • I need a feature XYZ.
New ideas and suggestions are always appreciated so don't hesitate to contact me. But of course I can't promise anything and paying the small shareware fee will greatly enhance motivation:-) [Back]

  • What about nested folder hierarchies (outline views)?
Nested folder hierarchies for subjects or so called outline views aren't planned for the future. [Back]

  • I hardly find a subject, I have too many of them!
Try to use the auto-locator. While the list in question is selected just type in a few letters. You can delete the selection with the Backspace key. [Back]

  • I need a more sophisticated search!
Try to use boolean expressions in your search terms. At least in Mac OS 10.4 and above you can use the following expressions: '&' (logical AND), '!' (logical NOT), '|' (logical OR), '*' (for every term) or '()' to group expressions. [Back]

  • What is this small window with the program icon useful for?
This small window can be used to drag and drop arbitrary content into JournalX. This content can be files, text snippets or images. Such a drag and drop is the same like a drag and drop onto the subject table. The main window doesn't have to be in front for such an operation. This is useful on small screens, for example. Additionally the whole application is going into the front when the icon is double-clicked. The window can be switched on and off in the menu. You can move it by grabbing the icon. [Back]

  • Is there a preview for images?
Since version 2.2.9 there is a thumbnail column. It can be switched on in the 'View Options' menu. But the search index have to be rebuilt once to use it for each database. The size of the thumbnails can be set in the preferences (Images). [Back]
